The Seodaemun Prison History Hall is…
The museum preserves and displays Seodaemun Prison signifying the suffering and pain of Koreans during the modern period. Here, independence activists and pro-democracy activities were jailed and martyred. Despite such a history of suffering, Koreans achieved independence and democracy. The Seodaemun Prison History Hall represents the history of struggle to achieve Korea's independence and democracy with such indomitable spirit and potential.
 
Yesterday and Today of the History Hall
Oct. 21, 1908 : Opened as Gyeongseong Gamok(Prison)
Sep. 3, 1912 : Name was changed to Seodaemun Gamok(Prison)
May 5, 1923 : Name was changed to Seodaemun Hyeongmuso(Prison)
Nov. 21, 1945 : Name was changed to Seoul Hyeongmuso(Prison)
Dec. 23, 1961 : Name was changed to Seoul Gyodoso(Correctional Facilities)
Jul. 7, 1967 : Name was changed to Seoul Guchiso(Jail)
Nov. 15, 1987 : Seoul Jail transferred to Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do
Feb. 27, 1988 : Designated as the National Historic Relics (No. 324)
Nov. 5, 1998 : Opened the Seodaemun Prison History Hall
Mar. 6, 2007 : Registered as a Grade 1 Specialized Museum (No. 37)
Oct. 18, 2007 : Designated as a National Memorial Facilities (No. 10-1-23)
Nov. 5, 2010 : Replaced and rearranged the facilities on exhibit
